An Open Letter to
Yves Guillemot:
A Call for Change
Dive into the decline of Ubisoft under Yves Guillemot. With decades in the industry, this critique exposes the fall from masterpieces to flawed titles, urging a return to gamer-focused excellence.
Dear Yves,
I still remember the first time I dropped into the theater in Splinter Cell: Spies vs. Mercs and snapped a mercenary’s neck. That visceral moment of stealth perfection? I think about it EVERY FUCKING TIME I walk into a theater. That’s the kind of grip your games used to have on people—on gamers.
But that magic is dead now, isn’t it? Ubisoft used to be a titan of innovation. You gave us Assassin’s Creed II—when Ezio strolled through Venice, every player felt like a fucking assassin. Every leap from a rooftop, every blade drawn was flawless. Now? You’ve reduced Assassin’s Creed to a bloated, open-world grindfest where “parkour” is just a glorified shuffle between checkmarks. Same thing with Ghost Recon—what used to be a heart-pounding tactical shooter has been bastardized into some lame, mindless co-op loot-fest. Rainbow Six Vegas? That game was a fucking masterpiece of tactics and team play. Today, Siege is a hollow shell, milking people for skins and overpriced season passes. And don’t even get me started on Far Cry. Far Cry 3 was an experience, a descent into madness on a tropical hellhole. Now? Far Cry is just a big, empty sandbox for wannabe influencers to run around in.
You’ve lost your way, Yves. Ubisoft is no longer making games for gamers. You’re making games for journalists and woke social justice warriors who don’t even play. You’ve watered down your titles for some imaginary, hyper-liberal audience who thinks video games should be more about virtue signaling than fun. And that’s where you’ve gone off the rails, Yves. Gamers don’t hate women or diversity. We just hate shitty games.
Let me break this down for you: we loved games like Control and Horizon Zero Dawn. Strong female leads? Yes, absolutely. Because those games were good. But we don’t want to be pandered to. You’re cramming political agendas down our throats, and it’s killing your brand. Your “inclusive” hiring practices aren’t about bringing in the best talent; they’re about ticking off boxes for your own narrow views. That’s why your games feel soulless—because the people making them aren’t the best, they’re the most “politically correct.”
You’ve delayed Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and we all know why: you’re scared. Your memo, full of corporate jargon about “exploring new avenues” for purchasing the game (like Steam), proves you know you’re already fucking up. You’ve bled this franchise dry with microtransactions, Ultimate Editions, and meaningless expansions. Asmongold was right when he called out Ubisoft for these absurd paywalls. No one wants to shell out $130 for half-baked DLC that should have been in the base game to begin with. Gamers are tired of your excuses. You’re dancing around your internal failures while charging players obscene amounts for content that’s as deep as a puddle.
Let’s talk about Star Wars Outlaws. How in the actual hell did you manage to make Star Wars boring? It’s like you took the Ubisoft open-world playbook, copy-pasted the same tired formula, and slapped a Star Wars skin over it. Buggy as hell, dumb AI, and generic side quests that serve no purpose other than to fill out your empty world. It’s embarrassing. Meanwhile, look at what Larian Studios did with Baldur’s Gate 3. They made a game for gamers, not for everyone. And guess what? They blew it out of the water. Their audience isn’t the “everyone” you’re chasing—it’s people who actually play video games. And they’re crushing it because they focused on quality, not market share.
Which brings me to your leadership. You and your board should be fired. Yes, I’m saying it outright. Your $2 share price is all the proof we need that you’ve driven this once-great company into the dirt. You’re more focused on pushing a political agenda than making games that people actually want to play. And don’t get me wrong, I’d have no issue with your agenda if the games were good. But they’re not. They’re shallow, broken, and riddled with microtransactions.
Take a hard look at the games that have succeeded with strong female leads and diversity:
- Control (Metacritic 85)
- Horizon Zero Dawn (Metacritic 89)
- Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (Metacritic 83)
- Tomb Raider (Metacritic 87)
- Baldur’s Gate 3 (Metacritic 96)
All these games excelled because they were crafted with passion and precision, not because they tried to score points with journalists. Ubisoft isn’t failing because gamers are sexist or anti-diversity. Ubisoft is failing because Ubisoft makes trash games now. And no amount of virtue signaling is going to save you from that reality.
Yves, it’s time to step down. Get someone in here who knows what the hell they’re doing. Hell, hire me. I don’t have any experience running a company, but I could definitely do better than you. You’ve already admitted, in your own pathetic way, that you know you’re fucking this up. Stop stringing us along. Stop making excuses. Get your shit together or get out. It’s that simple.
This isn’t just me venting. It’s a plea from the community you abandoned long ago. We deserve better. Gamers deserve better.
Sincerely, A. Furious Gamer (CEO in Waiting)
P.S. – I’ll be waiting for my job offer.
